Apple iOS 16.0.1 Release: Should You Upgrade?

Software Development Company use most Apple iOS, Apple iOS 16 is a buggy mess, and the release of iOS 16.0.1 will be the first of many dedicated bug fixes. But not everyone can get it. Here’s everything you need to know.

Tip: bookmark this page because I will keep it up-to-date if/when new problems are found. I will deliver my final verdict in a week to Software Development Company

Who Is It For?

Apple iOS 16.0.1 is exclusively for iPhone 14 models: that’s the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. Earlier this year, Apple admitted to auto-update delays, so it is best to trigger the update manually by navigating to Settings > General > Software Update. If you are running newer beta software (see ‘The Road Ahead’ section at the end), you must unenroll your device before the update appears.

The Deal Breakers

A day after release, I see no significant new problems. That said, iOS 16.0.1 also doesn’t address any of the many existing bugs reported by owners of older iPhones.

These include update crashes, touch response delays, and some eye-catching user interface glitches. sync issues (incl with Apple Watch), a blank screen screenshot bug, AirPlayissues, MMS messaging and jumping volume and brightnesslevels.

There are also still a lot of battery drain complaints with iOS 16. Battery drain temporarily increases after an iOS update due to reindexing, but I would have expected them to have died down by now.

So What Do You Get?

Apple’s iOS 16.0.1 release notes describe the update as providing “important bug fixes” and it lists the following three fixes specifically:

  • Fixes an issue with activation and migration during set up of iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro
  • Photos may appear soft when zooming in landscape orientation on iPhone 14 Pro Max
  • Enterprise single sign-on apps may fail to authenticate

Apple has a history of not declaring all the fixes in its iOS release notes, so I would be surprised if there are not more under the hood.

iOS 16.0.1 Security

According to Apple’s security page, iOS 16.0.1 contains no security fixes. That was not unexpected, coming just days after iOS 16 and iOS 15.7 delivered multiple patches.

Apple iOS 16.0.1 Verdict: Upgrade

iOS 16.0.1 only applies to iPhone 14 owners (for now), so there is no option to install the significantly more stable iOS 15.7. As such, you have nothing to lose in upgrading. No, iOS 16.0.1 doesn’t fix the vast majority of iOS 16 problems, but the fixes it provides are important, and it doesn’t appear to create new problems.

09/23 Update – Final Verdict

The good news is iOS 16.0.1 appears to be causing additional issues to those already reported in iOS 16. The bad news is it does nothing to fix the vast majority of them either. As such, for those already on iOS 16, it’s a no brainer to update. That said, as predicted, Apple has already rushed out a second dedicated bug fix in the shape of iOS 16.0.2. So the cycle begins again.

The Road Ahead

iOS 16.1 is already in beta testing, and it contains a number of features which didn’t make it into iOS 16. These include: lock screen customizations, support for Matter accessories, ‘Cleaning Energy Charging’, a battery percentage indicator for the status bar, a new screenshot UI and more. If you want early access to iOS 16 updates, join the Apple Beta Software Program.

Note: before iOS 16.1 launches, I expect several more ‘minor point’ dedicated bug fixes. It will be interesting to see whether this sees iOS 16.0.1 rolled out more widely or if there is a jump straight to iOS 16.0.2 for all iPhones. I would also not be surprised if an iOS 16.0.3 update arrives before iOS 16.1.
